you can see this whole area, 54th and central still blocked off, still under investigation. more when it becomes available. ashley yore, abc action news. this is days after another tragedy in the bay area. we're still waiting for information about funeral arraignments for hillsborough deputy john kotfila who died early saturday morning after a wrong way driver hit his patrol car. coming up at 6:30 we hear from his sister. right now we want to check with janelle, who has a traffic bridges. that's right. the westbound lanes of the court courtney campbell causeway are closed now due to a wrong way crash. cars are still getting on to head westbound, not sure if they are going to be stuck on the bridge or if police are letting them scoot around it. we're told the westbound lanes are shut down while they investigate and work to clear the crash. let's look at the maps, you can see the red, that means that the solid red means that the lanes are closed, either take

the howard frankland from hillsborough to pinellas or take hillsborough through tampa road through oldsmar. that might be quicker for you. the gandy bridge moving great as well. we'll keep you posted as to when that bridge opens back up. elsewhere in the bay area we're in great shape on the interstates, in the green, i-4 and i-75 into tampa. 275 over in pinellas county from bridge to bridge. ivan, we just made it this weekend, weather was pretty good. a little sticky now. >> yes, and a lot of clouds. i'm glad it's mostly cloudy though because what happened is folks heading from pinellas to tampa would bump into a sunrise that they are not used to this time of morning. we're talking about sunrise at 7:40. it's going to change things up here. so the overcast skies will help but keep in mind we have a different situation this morning. but the sunrise at 7:40. there is the stream of moisture coming in.

we had showers and storms late yesterday. this is what is left over, not much as far as any heavy downpours but we'll continue to track this as theyen to head from southwest to northeast. st. pete beach getting in on that as well. that will continue as we head through the next several hours. really through midday, we have this little narrow band of moisture coming in, that will impact pinellas, eventually hillsborough counties. hour by hour forecast taking us into the 70s and then eventually we're back in the 80s with muggy conditions. we'll break down the rest of the forecast for this coming week in a few minutes. democracy 2016 -- gop frontrunner donald trump is heading to tampa today and we'll be watching to see if things get out of control ahead of the primary tomorrow. trump is under fire now because of violence that happened at his rallies over the weekend. again our state is very important because it's a winner take all primary, 99 republican delegates are up for grabs.

the billionaire is hoping for a victory here and hoping it will spell the end of senator marco rubio's struggling campaign. trump will be holding a town hall style event at the tampa convention center. it's to begin at 2:00. police are closing franklin street at 8:00 a.m. to prepare for his arrival. we will live stream the event if you can't make it. the numbers are in favor of trump in the sunshine state. here's a look here. "the wall street journal" nbc news poll shows trump doubled the support of rubio or tampa bay senator ted cruz. in the general election the poll found all three would lose to democrat hillary clinton. immediately after his tampa visit today trump is going to head to the second winner take ohio. one of his biggest supporters, sarah palin is going to be staying here in florida to rally voters at the villages. palin was at the florida strawberry guest value in plant city over the weekend and she told us she thinks trump's fresh perspective will help him

a trump protester in the face. rubio called trump's attitude trouble. >> to have a leading contender for president telling people in his audience go ahead and punch someone in the face, i'll pay your legal bills. it's not excusable. it. it's disast -- descrat truss if a president does it. >> rubio says he's the only one who can beat trump in florida. ohio governor john kasich is getting high profile help from his home state. 2012 presidential nominee mitt romney will campaign with kasich today. as kasich looks to prevent trump from winning there. polls indicate a tight race between kasich and trump in ohio where all 66 delegates will go to the winner of its primary tomorrow. meanwhile, on the democratic side hillary clinton is getting a boost of her own in florida as she hopes to win the state's 246 delegates tomorrow. her husband, former president bill clinton is making stops in tallahassee, jacksonville and winter park.

coming up on 6:11. look at this massive traffic jam in raleigh, north carolina. troopers worked throughout the night trying to clear dozens of cars from a major interstate there. they tell us nearly 100 vehicles were involved in a series of accidents along i-40 shutting down the interstate for hours and sending more than 20 people to hospitals. we're told wet roads might have played a role in causing the first crash. then rubbernecking likely made that problem worse when more cars started crashing into each other. we could learn today if two suspects will be charged after police officers shot dead in a maryland suburb just outside the nation's capital. the prince george's county county police chief says the attack that killed an officer was unprovoked and there was an ambush. he says the 28-year-old was shot going about his business. at the station sunday afternoon. when bullets started to fly.

and the officers responded by returning fire. we're told the bullet hit one of the suspects during the fight and the second is being questioned. last night officers held hands outside of the station to honor that fallen officer. a four-year veteran of the force. starting with a few showers this morning. 6:00 now as we see them continuing to stream in from southwest to northeast. we'll continue to get wet through the early part of the day. we'll have a warming trend coming up, i'll talk about that in my next forecast. still ahead, a big step forward on a big cat's road to recovery. the innovative help he could soon get that no animal like

people in tampa are helping victims left with nothing after a weekend of deadly flooding in the deep south. this morning more than 1,000 people along the gulf coast

have nowhere to go. there are at least four people dead, most of them in hard hit louisiana. the red cross is now sending volunteers from all across the country to help with the recovery efforts including florida native brenda gatcom. she will make the journey first thing this morning to help people in the hard hit areas. more than 5,000 homes damaged and the national guard says it's rescued nearly 3,300 people. good morning. we are following some breaking news on the westbound courtney campbell, all lanes still blocked. we're also hearing of roadblock on the eastbound lanes as well. so that would be affecting people from pinellas into the tampa area. cars are still getting on the bridge, from the tampa side of the bridge. cars still getting on but they are getting stopped once they get there. so if you have not left yet don't try to get on the

you can take the franklin across or hillsborough from tampa road through oldsmar. in the opposite direction the eastbound lanes are open but look at that, it's taking 16 minutes to get across now. you might want to talk the howard frankland, that is taking just six minutes or the gandy bridge, just eight minutes. other problems. all in the green on the 75. good morning. we have a few showers continuing this morning. nothing terrible or thunderstorms, but you can see that narrow stream of showers off-shore. in fact some of them have been making their way onshore. that is the trend thought the morning. we'll continue to see those coming in, in the northeast track here. some of them will be on the more moderate side. we'll watch that. but they will tend to weaken as they come. in i'm not expecting much in the way of accumulation with this. as a southwest wind that takes

we're in pretty good shape. gusty by the way. we'll have the breeze and the humidity, it's quite muggy so we have temperatures now pretty summer-like in the upper 60s to lower 70s but the humidity is also cranked up. dew points, we have not seen this in a while. in fact yesterday we were in the low 70s. i don't think we've done that so far this year. there's the scale. once again above 60 starts to get more humid. 65, that is muggy. 70, oppressive. this is important because with temperatures in the low to mid- 80s today we're going to have a heat index, it will feel quite sultry with temperatures in the 80s. so quite a preview of summer, no question bit as temperatures continue the next few days in the low 80s. so this morning, showers give way to drier conditions through the middle part of the week. a weak boundary moving through mid-week. that won't bother us but the weekend starts looking iffy with the next front coming, in may linger and stall on us through the weekend with showers and thunderstorms.

today a bobcat hit by a car in brandon will have a dental exam at the big cat rescue. >> that 2-year-old exotic cat named "thor" is going to have a root canal and vets will remove wires that were holding his jaw threat. a driver hit him causing several injuries. vets this afternoon will decide if he's a candidate for a titanium tooth and if so he would be the first cat of his kind to have it done. he's expected to make a full recovery. it's grand prix weekend. >> a familiar face is waking up a winner this morning. >> pensky driver juan pablo montoya won the firestone grand prix for a second year in a row. as some 150,000 racing fans watched. city leaders say the race, the

this morning representatives from jessica alba's honest beauty care company are fighting back after a new report shows that company may be lying about what is exactly in their products. >> lots of people upset. we're following up on a lawsuit we first told you about last year that claims that the honest company was not so honest about its supposedly all natural products. the suit says honest dish soap, laundry detergent and diapers all contain synthetic preservatives. a "the wall street journal" uncovered honest laundry detergent uses a chemical in a list of ingredients that honest claims it would never put in its products. the research and development team denies it uses that chemical. a spacecraft is on its way to mars. about 50 minutes ago the european space agency launched a rocket carrying the xo mars probe. that massive spacecraft is the largest to head towards mars in a generation. scientists are hoping that xo

mars will answer a key question that puzzled them for a decade now. where trace amounts of methane found in mars' atmosphere are coming from. speaking of mars, that rocket that could take astronauts to the red planet passed a milestone last week. nasa successfully test fired the rs-25 rocket engine for 8 1/2 minutes. four of the engines will be used on each of the launch system missions. nasa is hoping to launch the sls from kennedy space center for the first time in two years. i wonder if they have daylight saving time on mars. hopefully not. extra hour of sleep. it's a slow go, right? we lose an hour of sleep this time every year. showers rolling in from the south and west. i'll let you know how it impacts the morning commute and what to expect temperature-wise later this afternoon coming up. right now we're tracking several big stories as you wake up. first breaking news, lefthand

right now two bay area police officers and six young people are in the hospital after a stolen car slammed into the officers' undercover pickup truck. you're looking live at the scene now off central avenue in st. pete. those officers were working undercover as parts of a special task force set up to stop young people from stealing cars when this accident happened. one officer we're hearing is from tampa, the other from st. pete. we're also hearing two of the six young people injured? the crash were transported as trauma alert patients. we're making phone calls now, trying to find out exactly how badly they were injured. all we know now is the driver is 25, the youngest person in that car is 15. we'll continue to monitor the

get to janelle with another traffic alert. if you're heading to the don't go. we have a major crash involving a semi truck causing problems in both directions. the westbound lanes completely blocked. you can see the solid red line here and the eastbound slow going as well. we have at least one lane blocked so cars are just slowly getting by. you're going to want to take the howard frankland or even hillsborough and tampa road up through oldsmar to make your way around that. again eastbound lane pretty slow right now. it was showing up at just 4 miles an hour just a few minutes ago. captain al is flying over this crash now. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: you can see that line of cars that you referred to. that is eastbound courtney campbell causeway just as you approach the boat ramp. this accident happened westbound just past the light at the boat ramp there. westbound.

i'll tell but that in a moment. but they caught a light pole so it's taking up one lane eastbound. one and i getting by, almost two mile backup coming towards tampa. going towards clearwater via the courtney campbell? you're going to be turned around way back by the beach there, at the light past davis. so be aware of that when you see the emergency vehicles. they are going to turn you around. eastbound you can get through, i would go across tampa road, hillsborough avenue or the howard frankland bridge, much better option. here's ivan with the forecast. it's so dark out there. we usually have first light by now but that won't happen for a while. in fact sunrise 7:41. so we have a ways to go. we have showers that are continuing to move north and east. moving rather rapidly. you can see the moisture coming into pinellas and eventually hillsborough. we'll continue to track this. nothing too heavy, certainly no thunderstorms but enough where you can see wet roads impacting st. pete. there you see the sky, we begin

that is the trend through the morning hours. by midday we begin to dry out. staying mostly cloudy but looking at temperature despite that well into the lower 80s. it will feel warmer as well because of the humidity. extended forecast coming up. 6:30. a critical day on the campaign trail for donald trump. he's pitching to voters in tampa on the eve of our primary. in over seven hours he will take the stage at the tampa convention center. we'll be streaming that event live as trump talks to supporters in a town hall style event. trump is leading in the polls by double digits ahead of a huge day of voting in our winner take all primary. there are 99 republican delegates at stake. analysts say a trump victory would be the final nail in the campaign. and a big visit like this means downtown area. i understand it's going to start early this morning. yeah, this traffic closure starts at 8:00 this morning. they are going to close franklin street in front of the convention center.

this is going to affect people trying to get to harbor island so what you're going to want to do, stay on channelside drive and take beneficial drive to harbor island because, again, franklin will be closed from channelside drive to old waters. just that little section in front of the convention center, that is going to start at 8: 00. that trump rally isn't until 2:00 so they won't open that back up until all the traffic has cleared from that. back to you. as for the democrats, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are taking their campaigns on the road today. clinton is going to be in chicago, talking about job creation. and sanders will end his day at roosevelt university in chicago after a four-day tour. former president bill clinton will be hitting the campaign trail on behalf of his wife in florida. he's stopping in tallahassee. to a heartbreaking story weekend. sheriff's office mourning the loss of one of its own after he was killed in the line of duty over the weekend. take a look. these are the badges marked with black stripes for deputy

john kotfila filled in the line of duty. now funeral arrangements are being made to put him to rest. abc action news reporter corey dierdorff joins you live from the fallen officer memorial in ybor city with the latest. the sister is opening up about her brother this morning. corey? >> reporter: yeah. good morning. about 15 minutes ago we saw one of the new recruit classes from the hillsborough county sheriff's office come on their morning run, come through the fallen officer memorial and slowly march in front of that flag that is at half-staff for fallen officer john kotfila. his family now working to finalize funeral arrangesments after learning about the horrific crash that took his life over the weekend. we're trying to figure out what caused the driver to travel the wrong way down the selmon expressway early saturday morning before slamming into the deputy's cruiser. the sheriff's office saying there's been an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies and communities all over the country. deputy kotfila comes from a family of law enforcement officers. his family was a sergeant with

the massachusetts state patrol. his brother a police officer in massachusetts with several other relatives also working in law enforcement. we're now hearing from his sister who tells us john was bright, always willing to help anyone at any time. >> it's been rough. still can't really believe it. keep thinking we'll wake up from this nightmare. >> reporter: caitlyn says she and her parents were expecting a visit from john in just a couple of weeks. instead they are traveling to florida to plan their son's memorial which will likely be held friday. we're hoping to learn more details on what just happened, why that driver turned around, was going the wrong way on the selmon expressway. more updates on air and on-line at abcactionnews.com. our thoughts and prayers to every member of the hillsborough county sheriff's office. corey dierdorff, abc action news. breaking overnight -- a man is shot in the leg but that shooting now is creating more questions than answers for officers.

officers say the victim is not being very cooperative. they found him on west francis avenue but he apparently was shot some place else. paramedics arrived soon and took him to the hospital. police say he's not saying where or even when he got shot. so if a nobody's in custody. dozens of people in a pasco rv park have their personal information at risk. deputies say a thief broke into the barrington rv park in hudson over the weekend. that burglar stealing a safe that had credit card information for about 80 people living at that rv park. detectives are now urging the victims to monitor their credit card activity and anyone with information about this burglary is asked to call the pasco county sheriff's office. new this morning, we're waiting on an autopsy to find out exactly what caused the polk county suspect to die at the hospital just hours after he was arrested. this happened early sunday morning and deputies say they responded to a call at a florida orange center bar where

they say one of the men, parafino hernandez was very drunk and deputies arrested him. at the jail they couldn't wake him up and stopped breathing. he was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead. madeira beach commissioners will be holding a rezoning meeting. combined they will add roughly 160 condo units and 700 hotel rooms to a small beach town. the first project is across the street from the second project. now locals are worried if both projects are built they will increase traffic in the area. the builders say they are working with fdot to ease impact on traffic congestion. before yesterday late titan week. coming. in not amounting to much but keep in mind some showers coming into pinellas, hillsborough and polk counties. the full forecast coming up. still ahead -- we tell you

good morning. traffic alert on the courtney campbell causeway. causing somewhat of a mess so pay attention. if you're coming from clearwater toward tampa eastbound on the lefthand side

but the backup still a couple of miles. people have known about this several hours but still choose to get out there instead of bypassing it. franklin to the north or howard frankland to the south would be a better option. if you're coming via courtney campbell you will be turned around past rocky point. back to the howard frankland nor you as well. they are in the process of clearing it but it's causing somewhat of a traffic mess. it should be opened in the next hour, hour and-a-half. here's janelle with more traffic. you can see the red on the courtney campbell causeway. avoid that now for the next few minutes until they get that cleared. even though they did just open up that other eastbound lane. we're still seeing major delays. the howard frankland flowing great, both in the green in both directions. also hillsborough avenue through oldsmar, tampa road moving great as well. check out the drive time though in the eastbound lanes, pretty slow going, 38 minutes, but look at that, the howard

frankland and gandy looking great. so those are your alternates. i've been checking other bay area roads, no other major crashes or breakdowns. here's i-4 in to downtown tampa through ybor city. just about 25 minutes to get from lakeland to tampa. if the folks were traveling tampa bay traffic they would be getting through faster. we have a ways to go before sunrise, 7:41 this morning. it's going to take a while for all of us to get used to it. not just because we lost the hour of sleep but the new daylight hours that we have to contend with. what is going on? we have titan doppler radar picking up on a couple of showers that continue to stream in from southwest to northeast. st. pete getting in on that as well. crossing the bridges and getting into tampa as well. none of this will to anything heavy and sustained. we'll continue to see the showers weakening.

head through the remainder of today but there's more moisture off-shore. this will be in fact the wettest of our week. we're in pretty good shape after getting through the showers. i think we'll do that in fact as we check the hour by hour forecast here in a second. then there you see the nice drying trend heading into the rest of the week. showers continue through 11:00. then moving into clear things out. dry things out with temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s. by the way it will feel warmer than that because the humidity is well up there. you've been feeling that yesterday with the dew points climbing up there. low 80s for the rest of the week. we're dry, partly sunny skies and then we have a frontal boundary that arrives heading into saturday with a few showers and storms. that may linger into sunday as that front stalls out. we'll time that out a little better and fine tune that forecast the next few days but for now after the morning hours we're in good shape the rest of the week. now to democracy 2016 -- donald trump is waking up in

minutes to get from pinellas into hillsborough now. even though they have reopened the lanes eastbound, still taking some time there. howard frankland is taking seven minutes, 8 minutes across the gandy bridge and again the westbound still blocked so don't even try to get on there. you're just going to be turned around. elsewhere in the bay area, in pretty good shape. no other major crashes or breakdowns. slow, typical for this time of morning on the veterans expressway, average speed 37 miles per hour. 38 on 275 southbound from fletcher to i-4 and pretty slow on i-75, about 60 miles an hour the average speed there from bruce b downs to i-4. on the titan doppler radar, we see a few showers coming from the south and west heading into pinellas and eventually hillsborough, tampa getting in on light sprinkles here. the trend is to weaken as it continues to move to the northeast. no thunder or lightning. just moderate showers. then we're clear by the afternoon. as far as the wet weather we'll

around, upper 70s to lower 80s and still muggy and warm at 8:00 and 73. 6 5 :4. we're following some more breaking news. eight people including several teens and two police officers accident. >> reporter ashley yore gines us with an update on how everyone is doing. >> reporter: everyone involved went to the hospital after this accident. we do know that those two officers involved are expected to be ok. i want to step out of the way and show you the damage here. that car you're looking at, that's the one that six young people were in, that stolen vehicle. now look at the truck, that's what the officers were driving. let me tell you the irony of this. these officers, one from st. pete, one from tampa, were part of a task force set up to stop young people from stealing cars. they were on a call about

another stolen car when this stolen car broadsided them. the driver was 25 years old and the youngest in the car just 15 years old. again, everyone went to the hospital, two of the young people trauma alerted out of here. right now the 25-year-old driver is the only one charged with running a stop sign. the hillsborough county sheriff's office is mourning the loss of one of its own after he was killed in the line of duty over the weekend. flags are at half-staff at the hillsborough county sheriff's office to honor the deputy there. and also at the fallen officer memorial in honor of officer john kotfila. right now authorities are trying to figure out what caused the travel the wrong way down the selmon expressway early saturday morning before he slammed into the deputy's cruiser. janelle and captain al are going to be tracking that crash on the courtney campbell for you all morning. look for updates and also we'll
